In early November, 2019, the Woolsey Fire burned through the Santa Monica Mountains. Starting above Simi Valley and fueled by dry chaparral, the deadly blaze burned relentlessly for several days until it reached the Pacific Ocean. Many homes were destroyed, and three firefighters were killed trying to save lives and property. Inspired by their bravery, I felt compelled to memorialize their courage. In my Malibu fire paintings, I’ve tried to capture the scorching heat of the inferno they faced so fearlessly.
